ANKARA, 20 November 2015 – UNICEF in Turkey is marking the Universal Children’s Dayby supporting the 16th Children's Forum and the national launch of the #FightUnfair campaign.
Activities reached their climax on the last day of the Forum, when 200 children from all over the country - including 40 Syrian children now living in Turkey assembled in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA).
TheChildren’s Forum is an annual event that brings together girls and boys from child rights committees set up in all 81 provinces of Turkey. This year’s Forum organized with the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, focused on the theme “Living Together”. During the 3 day Forum, children participated in workshops on empathy, harmonization, interpersonal communication and respect for cultures.
At a special session during the Forum, children discussed the UNICEF’s global #FightUnfair campaign. This gave them the opportunity to share their own perceptions of what is “unfair”, based on their daily lives at home, at school or in their communities.
The global #FightUnfair campaign is supported by an impressive team of UNICEF goodwill ambassadors. In Turkey, Goodwill Ambassador Tuba Büyüküstün is leading the efforts. She participated in the closing session of the Children’s Forum at the TGNA, and has been activating social and media networks to trigger action for the most vulnerable children as part of UNICEF’s Fight Unfair campaign.
Unite to Fight Unfair
“In today’s world, many children are left behind. They are in need of basic things such as food, care and love to live, learn and grow up in a protective environment,” Tuba Büyüküstün stated in her speech at the TGNA. “As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador I have witnessed the effects of conflict on children, they have unforgettable violent memories. We need to unite to support these children and their families. We need to unite to fight unfair and to create a better world for them and for all of us.”
Philippe Duamelle, UNICEF’s Representative in Turkey declared: “Inequities are shaping the life of far too many children around the world. Giving a fair chance in life to every child, everywhere- especially to the most disadvantaged – offers the greatest hope of breaking intergenerational cycles of inequity and poverty in every society. These cycles have to be broken if we want to realize a better world for children.”
UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
